A Lighthearted Tale of Love and Deception
The story revolves around Sunny, who is infatuated with Ananya, while Tulsi has feelings for Vikram. After Ananya decides to end her relationship with Sunny, Vikram also parts ways with Tulsi. In a twist of fate, the families of Ananya and Vikram plan their marriage, prompting Sunny and Tulsi to pretend to be a couple in an attempt to win back their former partners.
Shashank Khaitan's film, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, follows this classic romantic formula. While the film may not always be engaging, it offers a nostalgic take on romance, filled with humorous dialogue crafted by Khaitan and Ishita Moitra, alongside a protagonist who actively drives the plot.
Sunny Sanskari, portrayed by Varun Dhawan, is the son of a jeweller with a talent for evaluating gems. However, he fails to recognize that what he considers a serious relationship with Ananya (Sanya Malhotra) is merely a casual arrangement for her.
On the other hand, Tulsi Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor) has been in a longer relationship with Vikram (Rohit Saraf), but his affluent family does not accept her. Although Tulsi is labeled as middle class, her extravagant wardrobe and makeup budget raise questions about this classification.
The duo's plan is to evoke jealousy in their exes, as Sunny humorously states, but the film's 136-minute runtime seems to lose steam by the halfway mark. The question arises: how much longer can this complex love quadrangle be sustained before it simplifies into a straightforward romance?
Supporting characters, including Maniesh Paul as an overly enthusiastic wedding planner, Abhinav Sharma as the hero's loyal best friend, and Akshay Oberoi as Vikram's skeptical brother, contribute to the film's length, which feels unnecessarily inflated. Khaitan even attempts to incorporate themes of female empowerment before ultimately resolving the romantic entanglements.
Rohit Saraf and Sanya Malhotra receive ample screen time, ensuring they are active participants rather than mere background figures. Janhvi Kapoor makes a commendable effort to match Varun Dhawan's comedic timing and ability to transition between lighthearted and emotional scenes. Despite the lengthy title suggesting a focus on two characters, the film primarily showcases Sunny Sanskari.
Varun Dhawan shines with the best lines, scenarios, and dance sequences, making him the standout star. The true love story in Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari lies between Dhawan and the material that perfectly complements his talents.
Dhawan remains fully engaged and in top form, with the film coming alive in his presence. Although Sunny's charm doesn't always resonate with Ananya, it successfully carries the film forward.
